What to expect on this 2-day private round trip from Fes

Quick Answer

Short on time in Fes but set on sleeping in the Sahara? This private 2-day run is the quickest way to reach the towering Erg Chebbi dunes, ride a camel into a golden sunset and overnight in a Berber camp under a huge desert sky — with a drop-off back in Fes the following evening. You'll cross the cedar forests and mountain villages of the Middle Atlas, trace the palm-lined Ziz Valley and get a genuine feel for the south, all in your own vehicle with a private driver-guide.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

The full 2-day itinerary, day by day, with driving times

1
Day 1

Fes → Ifrane → Azrou → Ziz Valley → Merzouga

approx. 440 km7 h driving

Your driver picks you up from your Fes riad around 8:30 am and points south. You'll roll through Ifrane — the tidy, alpine-looking town nicknamed the Switzerland of Morocco — and stop in the Azrou cedar forest, where troops of wild Barbary apes gather among the trees. The route then drops through the Ziz gorges toward the desert, with a lunch break at a roadside Berber cafe. By late afternoon the Erg Chebbi dunes rise ahead: you'll meet your camel and guide for a sunset trek, pause high on a crest to watch the sand change colour, then reach camp for dinner, drumming and a night in the dunes.

Accommodation: Tawada Desert Camp or similar

2
Day 2

Sahara sunrise → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Fes

approx. 550 km8.5 h driving

Wake early for sunrise from the top of the dunes, then enjoy a Berber breakfast at camp. Ride the camels back to the trailhead — or swap them for a 4x4 crossing — to rejoin your driver. The road home climbs back over the mountains via Rissani, Erfoud, Errachidia and Midelt, with a lunch stop and another chance to photograph the monkeys near Azrou. You'll be back in Fes in the evening, dropped at your accommodation.
