High Atlas & Berber Villages Day Trip

Marrakech sits in a plain; forty minutes south the ground rises and everything changes. The Ourika Valley climbs alongside a river through walnut and cherry orchards, past Berber villages built in terraces up the slope, with the red earth giving way to green the higher you go. At Setti Fatma the road ends and a footpath takes over — a walk of about an hour over rocks and small bridges to the first of seven waterfalls, easy enough for most people in decent shoes.

Lunch is with a Berber family in their own home: tagine, bread baked that morning, mint tea on a terrace over the river. It is the cheapest way to understand what most of Morocco actually looks like once you leave the cities, and you are back in Marrakech by late afternoon. Spring is best, when snowmelt fills the river and the almond blossom is out.
