What to expect on this 5-day private round trip from Marrakech
This 5-day Marrakech desert tour is a private, unhurried journey from the Red City to the golden Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga — and back — designed so you actually get to enjoy each stop rather than race past it. Over five days you’ll cross the High Atlas Mountains via the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka pass, wander the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, and trek by camel into the Sahara Desert for a night under the stars.Unlike rushed 3-day trips, this desert tour from Marrakech gives the Dades Valley, the towering Todra Gorge and the nomad country around Merzouga the time they deserve. It runs daily, is fully private (just your group, your driver-guide and your pace), and can be tailored for couples, families and small groups.

The full 5-day itinerary, day by day, with driving times
Your desert adventure begins with a morning pickup from your Marrakech riad. Climbing the High Atlas Mountains, you’ll crest the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) with its snow-dusted peaks and switchback views, pausing for photos and a mint tea among traditional Berber villages.Next comes the highlight of the day: Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified earthen city and UNESCO World Heritage Site made famous by films such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones. You’ll have time to climb its clay alleys for a sweeping valley panorama before continuing to Ouarzazate, “the Hollywood of Africa.”The afternoon drive follows the scenic Rose Valley and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs into the Dades Valley, where dramatic rock formations glow at sunset. Dinner and overnight in a comfortable kasbah hotel.
Accommodation: Riad Paradise Dades or similar
After breakfast you’ll enter the Todra Gorge, where sheer 300-metre canyon walls rise on either side of a cool mountain river — a favourite of hikers and rock climbers. From here the landscape opens out as you drive south through palm oases toward Merzouga, gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes. In the late afternoon you’ll swap the vehicle for a camel and set off on a sunset camel trek across the Sahara, the dunes shifting from gold to deep amber as the light fades. You’ll reach your desert camp in time to settle into your tent, share a tagine dinner and listen to Berber drums beneath a sky thick with stars. Overnight in the heart of the dunes.
Accommodation: Tawada Desert Camp or similar
Wake early for one of the most memorable sunrises of the trip as the sun lifts over the Erg Chebbi dunes. After breakfast at camp, an off-road 4x4 desert tour takes you deeper into nomad country. You’ll visit Khamlia village to hear the hypnotic, sub-Saharan rhythms of Gnawa music, meet a semi-nomadic Berber family for tea, and learn how life works out here on the edge of the Sahara. Lunch is a local speciality — the famous Berber “medfouna” pizza — before you explore a desert oasis and, if you wish, try sandboarding or a quad-bike ride. Return to your riad to relax by the pool or take a quiet sunset stroll on the dunes. Dinner and overnight near Merzouga.
Accommodation: Riad Chebbi or similar
Today you leave the dunes behind and head for Rissani, the lively market town at the heart of the Tafilalet — birthplace of Morocco’s ruling dynasty and home to one of the country’s most authentic souks, brimming with spices, textiles and dates. From there a spectacular drive carries you along the Draa Valley, past Alnif, Tazarine and N’kob, with endless palm groves, ancient kasbahs and the peaks of the Anti-Atlas as your backdrop. You’ll stop often for photos and lunch at your leisure before reaching Ouarzazate, famed for its film studios. Check in, unwind and enjoy dinner in this atmospheric desert city. Overnight in Ouarzazate.
Accommodation: Riad Chamaa or similar
Start with a short tour of Ouarzazate, including the option to visit the legendary Atlas Studios — one of the world’s largest film sets, where blockbusters and series have been shot for decades. Then it’s back over the High Atlas Mountains, with a lunch stop and plenty of viewpoints, before your 5-day desert tour from Marrakech comes full circle. You’ll be dropped at your Marrakech accommodation in the evening, camera full and the Sahara still in your mind.
